PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

October uncharacteristically was mild and dry compared to the normal wet and dark days that we usually experience in the Lower Mainland. That mild and dry weather though seems to be in the rearview mirror now as we move into November.

Before we can welcome in November, schools must first celebrate Halloween and the end of October. We were fully able to celebrate the holiday at school this year with fun Halloween activities like pumpkin carving and a mystery box activity where students had to guess without using their eyes, what was in a series of boxes.

November brings about a busy time for students. As I am writing this, students are preparing for both Provincial Examinations as well as Examinations and Midterm projects for their regular courses. The students have been working diligently to prepare for their assessments and that hard work should show when parents and students receive their midterm report cards this month.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all and have a happy Halloween.

CLASSROOM SPOTLIGHT

Mr. Fan’s Class

In Chemistry 12, in addition to studying the core content such as reaction kinetics and dynamic equilibrium systems, we have had one activity exploring the field of “green chemistry”. In the activity, we applied a special type of bacteria to a vial containing water and simulated crude oil. This activity is supposed to simulate the treatment of an oil spill via biological means. Although we are still waiting for the final results, as the process can take several weeks, the students have learned a lot about physical, chemical, and biological means of crude oil removal.

Mr. Zhong’s Class

In Physics 12 this term, we performed a lab on collision in two dimensions. We set up an aluminum ramp and used two sets of balls to perform two separate. By measuring the height of the drop, we were able to calculate the time it takes for the object to reach the ground. After that, we measured the balls’ horizontal displacements and used the time to find the balls ‘horizontal velocities to determine the initial and final momentums of the balls. In each simulation were able to prove that the initial momentum of the projectile ball was equal to the final momentum of the projectile and target ball. The students were astonished by the principles of physics and being able to witness what they have been learning in a real lab simulation.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH

Gili Hu

Gili is the student of the month for October. Gili stood out from the rest of the student body with her dedication to staying after school and working with teachers in order to improve her abilities. Your hard work has not gone unnoticed Gili. Great work!

MAPLE HILL SCHOOL DOLLAR WINNER

We have begun allowing students to deposit their hard-earned Maple Hill School dollars so that they don’t lose them. The student who deposited the most amount of money was Yuki Yang! Great work Yuki on practicing English and helping out with Halloween! Students, please remember to deposit your money with me so I can keep track and you don’t lose your hard-earned dollars!
